The term Life Coaching comes from sports terminology. Just as a Coach can help bring a sports team to a win, a Life Coach helps you to win the game of life.
The trouble is that many people do not know what team they are on, what a win actually looks like or how to get themselves to practice. Or maybe they are practicing the wrong drills…
A Coach helps you to define where you are now and what you want from the future. Many of us have been conditioned to believe that certain things will bring us happiness, when in fact they don’t.
A good example of this is money. We are taught that in order to be happy, we need piles of money. But the truth is that if you have to do things you hate in order to make that money, it will not bring you the happiness that you are after.
Consider that fulfilling your purpose might be a better vehicle for creating happiness. If your purpose is to study wildlife, and you become a Lawyer solely to make a lot of money, happiness may become like a desert mirage and continually elude you.
On the other hand, fulfilling your purpose can make you happy even if you don’t make much money. Money is only a means to an end. It is meant to provide you with the resources to accomplish your aims and to give you pleasure. But it cannot be your SOLE source of pleasure.
Life Coaching helps you to get clear about these sort of obstacles, so that you can start off on the right foot. Then the Coach meets with you in order to keep you accountable to your goals and helps you win by offering techniques and strategies to minimize resistance.
Generally the process takes between three months to a year, depending on how frequently you meet. Coaches charge a wide range of fees, from thirty dollars to thousands. As with anything in life, do your homework and make sure that it is a good match before forking over your hard-earned money. Most coaches will offer a free phone interview call to help you make your decision.
